Restore points are a kind of safety net so if something goes wrong, you can always restore your PC to a previous state. To do so:. Windows 10 regularly stores cached data on your hard disk, and then when it needs the data, fetches it from there.

The time it takes to fetch cached data depends on the speed of your hard disk. It tells Windows to cache data to a USB flash drive, which is faster than a hard disk. Fetching data from that speedier cache should speed up Windows. The flash drive needs to support at least USB 2. The faster your flash drive, the more of a speed boost you should see. How to Speed Up a Slow Windows Computer for Free (with Pictures).EXTREMELY Slow Download Windows 10 Home – Microsoft Community

For the last month or so, I have noticed that my Windows 10 PC is getting way slower than usual download speeds. The computer is connected using cat 6 cable, so its not a Wi-Fi issue. I have checked for viruses and malware using Bitdefender, Malwarebytes and Ccleaner and have found nothing.

I have deactivated all background programs and even tried testing in safe mode with networking and still get the slower speeds. I downloaded a utility called iperf that tests speeds between 2 computers, using my Plex server as the host and my other computer as a client and get normal transfer speeds for my gigabit connection, around to mbps, which makes me believe that the network adapter is working correctly. I have updated the driver for my network adapter.

Uninstalled and reinstalled it from device manager. I have tried various settings regarding Windows update, internet bandwidth settings and Windows auto-tuning. Windows 10 is updated as well. I even tried a different network cable just in case but nothing seems to fix the issue. I had not installed any new software for a while before the problem began. I am a bit OCD when it comes to testing my internet speed, which I do it regularly, so I know the problem has been around for a month or less.

I just wanted to see if anyone has any other things I can try before going the next step and buying a new network card and seeing if that fixes the issue. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Thanks for the quick response! Tried everything you suggested and still no luck, still getting about half the download speed on my main computer that on my Plex server. None of the troubleshooters found anything wrong.

Not even the repair upgrade had any effect. At unless you have any other suggestions, I will probably just buy a new network adapter and install it just to rule out a hardware issue. This is a desktop PC. I built it about 3 years ago. I will include a report with all the hardware at the end, just in case you think it might be useful.

I don’t have any 3rd party firewall and have deactivated Windows firewall. I uninstalled the antivirus hardware without any change. I did try doing a system restore before I started asking for help here without any results.

If you have not already done so, restart the router. Try changing the network card driver, install an older version. If not, try running a clean boot:. Well, received a new network card today, installed it and still the same issue. Updated the driver and nothing. With my motherboard network adapter I had tried changing the network driver and nothing. The original driver on both network adapters was from mid or older and it used to work fine before this whole issue started. I even deactivated the on board network adapter just in case.

It is necessary to be connected to the internet to execute the DISM commands. Had already done that but did it again anyway. I also booted from a USB drive into Ubuntu Linux and the speed was how it was supposed to be, so the hardware is definitely not an issue.

I have looked at all I can imagine. Dreading the prospect of having to do a clean install. Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated. PC is connected via a switch, but have tried connecting it directly to the router and still no difference. Also, my Plex server is connected to the same switch and it does not have any issues and like I mentioned before, if I boot to a USB drive with Ubuntu, I get the download speeds I am supposed to get.

Deactivated the EEE setting on the network adapter and the “allow computer to turn off the device to save energy” option with no results. Tried again in safe mode and nothing. If you have any other ideas please let me know.

I will probably keep looking for a solution for another week or so before doing the clean install. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. Search the community and support articles Windows Windows 10 Search Community member. This thread is locked.
